There is no need to estimate the distance by trying to measure the map. You have already been told how far the journey is:

• In the beginning section, Lone Wolf tells you that you are to journey 2,000 miles to Elzian.
• There are 16 Grand Master disciplines (in the New Order series).

The solution to the problem is therefore 125 (dividing 2000 by 16):

 4: the dog
 4: the horse
11: total for the above individuals

Of the 103 legs, the remaining (103-11=) 92 legs belong to the cows. At four legs per cow, this gives the number of cows as (92/4=) 23.

Your thirty seconds have probably run out by now, but this calculation is readily possible within the available time. A mental shortcut for performing the final division calculation is to work with numbers that you know the results for instantly. In this case we can use:

92 / 4
= (100 - 8) / 4
= (100 / 4) - (8 / 4)
= 25 - 2
= 23
