Nereus

Aegaean

Nereus, son of Pontus and Gaea, was the father, by Doris, of the 50 Nereids. Described as a wise old man, Nereus lived at the bottom of the sea. He ruled over the ocean covering the Mediterranean, and in particular the Aegaean Sea, thus he is sometimes called Aegaean.

As is usual for sea gods, Nereus is often depicted with seaweed instead of hair, and is attributed with the power of prophecy. He played a crucial role in the story of Herakles.
