Gigantes

When Cronos mutilated his father, Uranus, drops of blood hit the ground. From these, the Gigantes (giants) were created by Gaea. They were huge in size, and had monstrous faces and the tails of dragons. Armed with large rocks and trees they attacked heaven, but with the help of Herakles, the gods managed to defeat them and they were buried under various volcanoes, including Mount Etna.

This story obviously acts as an explanation for, or took its inspiration from volcanic activity. There are many parallels that can be drawn between this battle and the Titanomachia.
